Volvo and Nvidia have formed a partnership that will see the pair collaborate on AI technology for self-driving vehicles.

Speaking to investors and media at Volvo’s annual event for the capital-markets community, Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt said:

“Partnership is the new leadership. If we are to succeed in the future with speed, quality, and safety – and to gain benefits of autonomous driving – we need to partner up with the best guys. In this world of unknowns, you need a partnership built on trust.”

Volvo is the world’s second-largest truckmaker after Daimler. The carmaker demonstrated its first cabin-less autonomous truck called Vera last year.

By applying AI to trucks, Volvo hopes to disrupt industries from public and freight transport, to forestry and construction.

Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO, commented:

“Trucking is the world’s largest network – a network that through online shopping puts practically anything, anywhere in the world, quickly within our reach.

The latest breakthroughs in AI and robotics bring a new level of intelligence and automation to address the transportation challenges we face. We are thrilled to partner with Volvo Group to reinvent the future of trucking.”

The deal with Volvo is a particular boost for Nvidia and its AI technology for self-driving cars after Tesla ditched the firm last year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would focus on creating its own chips.

Nvidia debuted its ‘Xavier’ processors for the company’s DRIVE autonomous car platform last year. Xavier was in development for over four years, represents the work of over 2,000 engineers, features more than nine billion transistors, and Nvidia claims it’s the most complex system-on-a-chip (SoC) ever created

During a conference call in August last year, Huang said: “It’s super hard to build Xavier and all the software stack on top of it. If it doesn’t turn out for whatever reason for them [Tesla] you can give me a call and I’d be more than happy to help.”

Nvidia has made a name for itself as the maker of powerful GPUs, traditionally for gaming purposes. The company has been increasingly shifting gears into other computation-heavy areas like AI and machine learning.

Automotive chips accounted for $641 million of Nvidia’s $11.7 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year.

Sony is leading an alliance of taxi companies to create an AI-powered hailing system.

While Uber brought us on-demand taxi rides at the press of a button, Sony wants to use AI to further improve on the model. By studying conditions such as traffic, weather, and current events — taxis can be dispatched automatically where needed.

One example, which many of us will have experienced, is the frustration of getting transport home after a concert. Sony’s algorithm would ensure a fleet of taxis are ready to pick up a surge of attendees exiting the event. More taxis could be dispatched if the weather conditions are poor and people are less likely to walk and use alternative transport such as buses.

Sony is currently focusing on its native market of Japan for the initial release; with no word of plans to release elsewhere. Japan has a ban on the use of private vehicles for ridesharing which enables Sony to gain a foothold in a market with little competition.

However, the company will have to move fast. Automotive giant Toyota is also looking for a slice of the market and poured $70 million into JapanTaxi, another company which is working on an AI-powered taxi system.

The taxi companies involved in Sony’s alliance includes Checker Cab, Daiwa Motor Transportation, Green Cab, Hinomaru Kotsu, and Kokusai Motorcars.

As self-driving cars grow in prominence, AI hailing systems like what Sony is developing will become invaluable. The company has a chance at becoming a leader in what’s set to become a very lucrative market.

NVIDIA has unveiled an AI-powered supercomputer called Pegasus to power ‘Level 5’ self-driving vehicles. The announcement was made during the company’s GTC Europe event in Munich, Germany, with the intention of making self-driving ‘robotaxis’ a reality.

Pegasus is powered by four high-performance AI processors. It couples two of NVIDIA’s newest Xavier system-on-a-chip processors — featuring an embedded GPU based on the NVIDIA Volta architecture — with two next-generation discrete GPUs with hardware created for accelerating deep learning and computer vision algorithms.

Level 5 represents fully autonomous vehicles which do not even have a steering wheel or gas pedal for manual control. This will require significant power to process all the required operations quickly.

“Creating a fully self-driving car is one of society’s most important endeavors — and one of the most challenging to deliver,” said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO. “The breakthrough AI computing performance and efficiency of Pegasus is crucial for the industry to realize this vision.”

“New types of cars will be invented”

NVIDIA claims its Drive PX Pegasus solution is able to deliver more than 320 trillion operations per second. The company’s previous self-driving car supercomputer, the Nvidia Drive PX 2, was around 13 times slower.

Building a fully autonomous Level 5 self-driving vehicle requires thousands of sensors including high-resolution, 360-degree cameras. The position of the vehicle must be calculated within centimeter accuracy to ensure safety. NVIDIA estimates the computing demands of driverless vehicles to be up to 100 times more intensive than the most advanced cars today.

Autonomous vehicles are set to be a huge industry in the coming years and NVIDIA is rapidly positioning itself as a leader in the space. Of the 225 partners developing on the NVIDIA DRIVE PX platform, more than 25 are developing fully autonomous robotaxis using NVIDIA CUDA GPUs.

“Driverless cars will enable new ride- and car-sharing services. New types of cars will be invented, resembling offices, living rooms or hotel rooms on wheels,” continues Huang. “Travelers will simply order up the type of vehicle they want based on their destination and activities planned along the way. The future of society will be reshaped.”

NVIDIA believes fully autonomous will have a drastic impact on people’s lives. Millions of hours, it claims, of ‘lost time’ will be recaptured by would-be drivers being able to work, play, eat, or even sleep on their daily commutes. Safety, meanwhile, will improve — with fewer accidents caused by fatigued, distracted, or impaired drivers.

Pegasus will be available to NVIDIA automotive partners in the second half of 2018.
