EmoNet: Emotional neural network automatically categorises feelings

emonet neural network ai artificial intelligence emotions feelings

A neural network called EmoNet has been designed to automatically categorise the feelings of an individual.

EmoNet was created by researchers from the University of Colorado and Duke University and could one day help AIs to understand and react to human emotions.

The neural network is capable of accurately classifying images into 11 emotions, although some with a higher confidence than others.

‘Craving,’ ‘sexual desire,’ and ‘horror’ were able to be...

Samsung researchers create AI which generates realistic 3D renders of video scenes

Samsung researchers create AI which generates realistic 3D renders of video scenes

Three researchers at Samsung have created an AI which can generate realistic 3D renders of video scenes.

In a paper detailing the neural network behind the AI, the researchers explained the inefficient process of creating virtual scenes today:

“Creating virtual models of real scenes usually involves a lengthy pipeline of operations. Such modeling usually starts with a scanning...

IBM open-sources three AI projects dedicated to curing cancer

ibm ai artificial intelligence health healthcare cancer treatment open source

IBM has made three AI projects aiming to help cure cancer available to the open-source community.

Cancer is estimated to have caused 9.6 million deaths in 2018 alone. Around one in two will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and few will not know someone impacted by its blight.

Fortunately, advancements are making the discovery and treatment of cancer faster and more effective. IBM has been working on three AI-powered projects to help tackle this global...

Facebook lends its AI powers to the OpenStreetMap community

facebook openstreetmap ai artifical intelligence map

Facebook is providing its Map With AI service to the largest open-source mapping project, OpenStreetMap.

Whereas mapping efforts from Google and Apple focus on navigating major cities, OpenStreetMap aims to ensure the smallest dirt paths are mapped.

Mapping the whole Earth is no small task: a sizeable local community helps, but it’s an impossible task manually both due to scale and often difficult to make out imagery.

In a Facebook blog post, mapping expert...

Microsoft and OpenAI join forces in the quest for artificial general intelligence

microsoft openai gai ai general artificial intelligence

Microsoft has announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI as part of a shared ambition to achieve the holy grail of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

If you’ve spent your life binging on sci-fi flicks and shows, today’s AI is far from the likes of HAL and Jarvis. For those kinds of experiences, AGI is needed.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said:

“The creation of AGI will be the most important technological development in human history, with the potential...

Ofcom: AI is not ready to effectively moderate online content ‘for the foreseeable future’

ofcom cambridge consultants ai artificial intelligence content moderation social media facebook instagram

Ofcom and Cambridge Consultants have teamed up on a report examining the effectiveness of AI-powered online content moderation.

Governments around the world have put increasing amounts of pressure on social networks and communication services to take responsibility for content posted on them. Society itself is becoming more aware of the dangers following live-streamed terror attacks, cyberbullying, political manipulation, and more.

With some platforms having billions...

No Rekognition: Police ditch Amazon’s controversial facial recognition

Orlando Police have decided to ditch Amazon’s controversial facial recognition system Rekognition following technical issues.

Rekognition was called out by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for erroneously labelling those with darker skin tones as criminals more often in a test using a database of mugshots.

Jacob Snow, Technology and Civil Liberties Attorney at the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, said:

“Face surveillance will be used to...

Jonathan Bowl, Hitachi Vantara: On the changing face – and pace – of big data

We have all heard the ‘data is the new oil’ aside, usually elicited by someone who honestly believes you’re hearing it for the first time. Indeed, the caveat that data needs to be built upon – as oil is only thick goop before refinement – is never too far away either.

Thankfully Jonathan Bowl, vice president and general manager of big data analytics and IoT at Hitachi Vantara, has a much more refreshing take on this aphorism. Data is not the new oil, he explains. Data...

Musk wants to link human brains with machines to ‘stop the AI apocalypse’

Elon Musk’s ambitious Neuralink project to link human brains with machines is part of the entrepreneur's crusade to “stop the AI apocalypse”.

Musk has been vocal with his concerns about AI, famously saying we’re “summoning the devil” with its development. The SpaceX and Tesla founder created OpenAI in part due to concerns that AI could pose an existential risk if developed carelessly.

In February last year, Musk left OpenAI over disagreements with the...

Rubik’s Cube proves AI isn’t always best at computational tasks

A humble Rubik’s Cube has proven that AI isn’t always best at performing computational tasks.

Researchers from the University of California developed an AI system capable of solving a Rubik’s Cube in 1.2 seconds.

That sounds impressive – and to us mere humans it most certainly is, with the world record at 3.47 seconds being held by Yusheng Du – but the AI solved the Rubik’s Cube around three times slower than the fastest algorithm not trained using a neural...
